Sliding deck system over pool area - Decks & Wood Engineering

SLIDING DECK SYSTEM

Designed by Decks and Wood Engineering, our sliding deck systems are the perfect solution for smaller outdoor areas. When you're not using the pool, simply close the deck to create a safe, usable surface that prevents children from accessing the water.

Dual-Purpose Design

Closed: Creates a secure deck surface that's perfect for entertaining or playtime
Open: Reveals your full pool area when you want to swim

Ideal for:

• Small garden spaces
• Families with young children
• Maximizing outdoor living areas
• Cape Town homes with limited space

  • Family Safety: Creates a solid floor over the pool - prevents accidental access
  • Space Optimization: Converts pool area into usable deck space when covered
  • Less Maintenance: Keeps leaves and debris out of your pool
  • Energy Efficient: Reduces water evaporation and chemical use
  • Aesthetic Integration: Seamlessly blends with your existing outdoor design
  • Deck structure installation with treated pine - Decks & Wood Engineering

    DECK INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS

We use SAP (South African Pine) treated pine for all our deck structures. This timber is treated with preservatives containing copper, chromium, and arsenic to protect against fungus and termite attack (wood preserving treatment).

    SAP Treated Pine Structure

We use treated pine timber preserved with copper, chromium, and arsenic compounds. This treatment protects against fungus and termite attack, ensuring decades of durability.

    Precision Center Spacing

500mm Centers: We place our structure on 500mm centers when using hardwood decking. This prevents cupping, twisting, or warping of deck boards.

    Concrete Foundation System

We use treated pine decking round posts planted into concrete foundations. This eliminates bouncing and provides a rock-solid, stable deck surface.

    Weed Prevention Barrier

We install cloth membrane cover or heavy-duty plastic sheeting under the entire deck structure. This effectively stops unwanted weeds from growing through.

Garapa hardwood decking installation - Decks & Wood Engineering

    SCREWING DOWN GARAPA HARDWOOD

Garapa (Brazilian Ash) is a high-density hardwood species native to Brazil, also known as Gold and Iron wood. It comes from sustainable sources and provides an exceptional finish.

    Garapa Specifications:

    • High-density hardwood native to Brazil
    • Also known as Brazilian Ash, Gold and Iron wood
    • Sustainably sourced from managed forests
    • Exceptional durability and beautiful finish

    Our Installation Protocol:

  • Pre-Drilling: We drill with a 4.2mm drill bit with 10mm counter-sinking to allow screws to sit flush with the Garapa surface
  • Double-Screw Fastening: We screw 2 screws on every joint to prevent warping and ensure maximum stability
  • Precision Spacing: We maintain consistent 5mm gaps between decking boards for proper drainage and expansion
  • Professional Finish: All screws are installed flush with the wood surface for a clean, professional appearance
  • Quality Control: Each board is carefully positioned and secured according to our strict quality standards

    MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING

Proper maintenance extends your deck's lifespan and maintains its beauty. Follow these guidelines for optimal care.

    Routine Cleaning

Periodic cleaning with simple soap, water, and a stiff brush will keep your deck looking new. Regular maintenance prevents buildup and maintains appearance.

    Stain Removal

For aged or failing stains, use a good commercial cleaner designed for hardwood, such as Woodrich brand EFC-38. Contact Decks & Wood Engineering for professional assistance if needed.

    Natural Wood Care

Garapa contains natural oils that protect the wood. Never use paint or conventional varnish, as these seal in natural oils and cause bubbling and premature failure.

    IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT GARAPA

Garapa outdoor board is a natural forest product that varies in color and appearance. Color can change to grey depending on maintenance schedule and weather exposure.

DO NOT PAINT OR VARNISH hardwood decking. Garapa has natural oils inside that need to come out naturally. If you block the surface with varnish, the oil will cause the varnish to bubble and peel when it tries to escape.

    Maintenance Schedule:

Regular: Sweep weekly to prevent dirt buildup
Monthly: Inspect for loose screws or boards
Bi-annual: Deep clean with soap and water
    Annual: Professional inspection recommended

    TREATED PINE PAINTING & PROTECTION

DOES TREATED PINE NEED TO BE PAINTED?

Treated pine can be primed and over-coated with Acrylic/water-based paint. While primer is recommended, your local paint retailer may recommend a quality paint that doesn't require it.

  • Primer Recommended: Always use primer for best adhesion and protection
  • Paint Type: Acrylic or water-based paints work best on treated pine
  • Consult Experts: Your local paint retailer can recommend the right products
  • Preparation: Clean and dry the wood thoroughly before painting
  • HOW DOES PAINTING TREATED PINE BENEFIT YOU?

    Prevents Wood Rot

Painting creates a protective barrier that prevents moisture penetration and wood rot.

    Stops Graying

Prevents the wood from turning gray due to UV exposure and weather conditions.

    Extends Lifespan

Limits the amount of weathering and extends the overall life of the wood.

    Additional Safety

Reduces potential for dislodgeable arsenic, providing extra protection.

    SAFETY INFORMATION

Treated pine has been regularly proven to be safe for human use. Painting the treated pine assists with reducing any potential for dislodgeable arsenic, further protecting you from any potential hazard. This is especially important for decks frequently used by children or in entertainment areas.

    Painting Best Practices:

Surface Prep: Clean and sand the wood before painting
Primer First: Always apply a suitable primer
Weather Conditions: Paint in dry, mild weather
Multiple Coats: Apply 2-3 coats for optimal protection
Maintenance: Touch up chips and scratches promptly
